ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The UN Security Council on Monday condemned in the strongest terms the recent ISIS attack in Diyala province, Iraq, on Friday, Jan 21, 2022, that killed at least 11.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Iraq, and they wished a speedy and full recovery of those who were injured," read the Security Council statement.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the independent, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process and prosperity of Iraq," it added.

The UN Security Council members "reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all mean(s), in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."

Moreover, the UN Security Council reaffirmed their support for Iraq's security and the continued fight against terrorism.

The statement did not mention the Jan 20 ISIS attack on the Hasakah's al-Sina'a prison, which holds nearly 3,500 terrorist suspects. As of Tuesday morning, clashes are ongoing between ISIS and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) at that facility in northeast Syria.

Despite Iraq declaring victory over the extremist group in December 2017, the fight to eradicate ISIS from the country continues.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also expressed his concern about the increasing number of ISIS terrorist attacks in Iraq and Syria on Sunday.

He also said that the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga must maintain its cooperation with the Iraqi military and the US-led coalition against ISIS.

Anti-ISIS operations and cooperation between the Iraqi Army and the Kurdish Peshmerga markedly increased in the disputed territories since late November, following the killing of 23 Peshmerga fighters and civilians in multiple ISIS attacks.
