Canada’s Ambassador meets with PM Barzani, praises region’s peaceful coexistence

Canada wants to further develop ties with the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the agricultural, investment, and technology sectors.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Canada’s new Ambassador to Iraq Gregory Galligan said his country hopes to further develop ties with the Kurdistan Region in a meeting with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday. 

The prime minister received Galligan in his office in Erbil and congratulated him on his new role as Canadian Ambassador to Iraq. He also wished him success in developing bilateral ties between Canada and the Kurdistan Region.

For his part, Galligan said he was happy to begin his work in Iraq and briefed Barzani on his country’s programs and activities in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. 

He said his country wants to further develop ties with the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the agricultural, investment, and technology sectors. 

Ambassador Galligan also praised the peaceful coexistence among the different components in Kurdistan Region. 

The prime minister and the ambassador discussed a number of other important topics, including the war against ISIS, the importance of supporting the Peshmerga, and reforms the Kurdistan Regional Government is undertaking. 

On Dec. 23, 2021, the Canadian Government announced that Gregory Galligan was the new Ambassador to the Republic of Iraq, replacing Ambassador Ulric Shannon.
