The offensive is part of the on going campaign to liberate Nineveh province from the jihadist group.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - On Thursday morning, Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched military operation on the Islamic State (IS) from north and east of Mosul.

According to the General Command of Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan Region, a large-scale operation was launched at 06:00 am local time from north and north east of Mosul.

The offensive is part of the on going campaign to liberate Nineveh province from the jihadist group.

The operation will be from three front lines, following the recent advances of Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces in the east and south of Mosul, according to the statement.

It also mentions that the purpose of the offensive is to clear some nearby villages and secure strategic areas to further restrict IS movemnents in the area.

Peshmerga forces are heavily shelling IS positions in the area, said Kurdistan24 reporters on front lines.
