President Barzani meets world leaders in Davos

“During the conference, the President is scheduled to hold a number of meetings with other attendees.”

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The President of the Kurdistan Region on Monday departed for Europe to attend the 2017 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Masoud Barzani, the President of Kurdistan Region, along with the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) Chief of Staff Fuad Hussein, and the Head of Department of Foreign Affairs Falah Mustafa arrived in Davos on Monday.

President Barzani’s visit to Davos was highlighted by the KRP in an official statement.

“[The President] will attend the annual economic conference at a time when the Peshmerga forces of the Kurdistan Region have played a major role in drastically weakening the terrorists of the Islamic State (IS),” the statement read.

“During the conference, the President is scheduled to hold a number of meetings with other attendees,” the KRP statement continued.

On Tuesday, President Barzani met with the US Vice-President Joe Biden to discuss several important topics.

According to a Kurdistan24 reporter in Davos, the President and Vice-President Biden addressed the fight against IS and the perspective of the next US administration.

President Barzani also met with the Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations also released a statement outlining the discussion between President Barzani and Biden.

“The two sides spoke of the general situation in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the current war with IS terrorists,” the report read. 

In another meeting, President Barzani thanked Norway for its support to the Region and hoped the relations between the two nations would improve in 2017.
