Erbil police arrest gang involved in robbery and murder
In a statement on Thursday, the Directorate of Erbil Security announced the arrest of a group of five who have allegedly been involved in robbing and murdering Kurdish citizens.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – In a statement on Thursday, the Directorate of Erbil Security announced the arrest of a group of five who have allegedly been involved in robbing and murdering Kurdish citizens.
The statement mentions that the gang has confessed that they murdered Mahmoud Osman Mohammadamin the Islamic preacher in Erbil on Jan. 31 who is known as Mulla Mahmoud.
The accused are Mohammed Sabr Abdullah, Tariq Aziz Mahmoud, Sarkawt Kareem Hamad, Nizam Shukur Ismael, and Kawa Mohammed Khazr.
Mulla Mahmoud also had a currency exchange shop and was killed by at least one armed man in front of his house while returning home from work carrying about US $80,000 in cash. The murderer(s) stole the money and immediately disappeared.
According to the security statement, the gang had been involved in many other crimes and robbery in Erbil, killing Mulla Mahmoud was their last activity.
The police mentioned that investigation and legal measures are still ongoing and further detail will be announced publicly in later stages.
On Thursday evening, the father and brother of Mulla Mahmoud told Kurdistan24 that they ask the security and court in the Kurdistan Region to make the harshest punishment for the gang.
The family say that death penalty would be a lesson for other gangs, preventing crime and bringing peace and stability back to the city.
