Iraq ‘staying away’ from US-Iran conflict: PM Abadi

Iraq is ‘staying away’ from the tensions and conflicts between the US and Iran, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Wednesday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq is ‘staying away’ from the tensions and conflicts between the US and Iran, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Wednesday.

Baghdad wants to keep a “balance” in its relations with Washington and Tehran, Abadi said during an energy conference in Baghdad, stating such policy was in the best interest of Iraq.

“I’m staying away from it,” Iraqi Premier said, referring to the conflict between the US and Iran.

Iraq’s top official also hoped that the deal to restrain Iran’s nuclear program would be maintained by Washington.

Since the 2003 toppling of the regime of Saddam Hussein, Iraq's Shia-led government has often been accused of being under the heavy influence of Iran. Balancing Iraq's relationships with Iran and the US, often hostile to each other, has been an ongoing challenge for multiple Iraqi administrations.
