ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will travel to Tokyo tomorrow to meet with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and attend an Iraq-focused conference, according to the Japanese government.
“Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will pay an official visit to Japan from April 4 to 5,” the Embassy of Japan in Iraq said in a statement released on Tuesday. “Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold a meeting with Abadi and hold a dinner in his honor.”
The embassy mentioned that both officials would attend the opening ceremony of a Japanese-organized conference on job creation and vocational training in Iraq to facilitate arms control in the country, scheduled to be held in Tokyo on April 5.
Abadi announced during his weekly press conference on Sunday that he will travel to Japan in the coming days.
Previously, Alaa Yasiri, director of the Iraqi Oil Marketing Company (SOMO), said his country was considering building facilities to store Iraqi crude oil in Japan and South Korea as part of a plan to increase sales to Asian customers.
Japan has already granted loans to Iraq to help rebuild infrastructure and power projects to help reduce chronic electricity shortages throughout the country. Last week, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) announced the donation of $4.5 million from Japan to support Iraq emergency response related to humanitarian and stabilization efforts in areas liberated from the Islamic State (IS) still littered with explosives.
