Gazprom reaches 23,000 bpd in Kurdistan Region's Garmian field
Russian oil giant Gazprom Neft released a brief statement on Friday announcing that oil production at its Garmian field in the Kurdistan Region has reached more than 23,000 barrels per day (bpd).
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Russian-owned oil giant Gazprom Neft released a brief statement on Friday announcing that oil production at its Garmian field in the Kurdistan Region has reached more than 23,000 barrels per day (bpd).
According to the statement, the company's total production in Garmian, located in the province of Sulaimani, has reached 1 million tons of oil.
There are 57 oil blocks in the Kurdistan Region, ten of them located in Garmian.
Gazprom Neft, Russia's third-largest oil producer, began operating in Iraq in 2010, in the southern province of Wasit. In the summer of 2012, the company entered into two other projects in Iraq.
The first was a product-sharing agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for both the Garmian and Shakal blocks. In 2013, the company signed an additional deal for the Halabja block.
Gazprom Neft is a major player in the petroleum industry in the Middle East. In Turkey, it is the largest oil supplier. Authorities in Ankara granted the energy firm an exemption from several tax requirements for its pipeline operations on the Turkish continental shelf.
In late May, Russia's Rosneft announced it had signed an agreement with the KRG to develop its oil and gas infrastructure, including the design of a new gas pipeline that could boost oil production in the Kurdistan Region up to 10,000 bpd by the end of 2018.
