Kurdistan's Health Ministry reports six new COVID-19 cases

All of the new cases were in Erbil’s Soran district.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday it had recorded six new cases of the coronavirus disease, all in Erbil’s Soran district.

A ministry statement said the new cases included five men and a woman residing in three different neighborhoods in Soran. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the Kurdistan Region, as reported by the authorities, to 387, including five deaths and 330 recoveries.

The ministry also said that its specialized laboratories had conducted 1,082 coronavirus tests across the autonomous region in the past twenty-four hours: 412 in Erbil, 206 in Sulaimani, 300 in Dohuk, 15 in Halabja and 149 in Erbil’s Soran district.

The statement added that 9,681 individuals have been quarantined so far, with 1,307 still under the restriction.

As the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) began easing lockdown measures in late April, the Interior Ministry launched a webpage through which citizens have been able to obtain permits to travel among the provinces and administrative units of the Kurdistan Region.

The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the public can apply for the necessary travel documents seven days a week from eight in the morning till 3 in the afternoon.

Despite the low rate of new COVID-19 cases, KRG officials have stated that disease remains a public health risk and that the authorities will continue implementing preventive measures to curb its spread.
