ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Two civilians were killed and two others were injured Saturday morning in a ground assault by Turkish-backed forces near the villages al-Mashifa and Jahbal, east of Ain Issa in northern Syria.

“The attack coincided with intensive artillery shelling targeting the area and the M4 road, the SDF Press office said, adding its forces killed five Ankara-aligned fighters as violent clashes erupted in the area.

The SDF noted that the Turkish-backed operation coincides with the deadly assault by ISIS on the prison holding suspected terrorists in Hasakah, where fighting is reportedly ongoing.

“Our forces continue efforts to secure the area and prevent Daesh (ISIS) detainees from escaping,” the SDF said.

Despite ceasefire agreements between Turkey and Russia and Turkey and the United States since October 2019, Turkish-backed groups and the Turkish army continue to regularly target SDF-held areas. Often victims fall victim to these attacks.

Most of the attacks are concentrated near Tal Tamr, Ain Issa, and areas near northern Aleppo.
