ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A targeted Iraqi airstrike on Anbar province killed at least two ISIS members on Thursday, including a senior member of that group.

Codenamed Abu Malika, Muthanna Khodor Kamel Shatran was the Wali (ruler) of Anbar province for ISIS, which controlled most of the area for three years before being toppled in 2017, the Security Media Cell of the Iraqi military announced on Thursday.

Shatran was in a car in Anbar’s Rutba district when he was killed. His assistant, Abu Zaid al-Mahlawi, was also killed in the strike, the military media said.

Al-Mahlawi was responsible for the killing of Iraqi commander Ahmed Abdul Wahid Al-Lami, according to the Media Cell.

The Iraqi Air Force has intensified its air campaign against ISIS hideouts and leaders since the US-led coalition officially ended its combat mission in Iraq in December 2021.

On Sunday, Iraqi F-16s targeted an ISIS hideout in a remote area of Kirkuk province.

The ISIS remnants are mostly active in the northern and eastern Iraqi provinces, particularly in the disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad. They launch hit-and-run attacks against Iraqi and Kurdish forces and civilians.
