ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Council of the European Union on Monday in a statement extended the mandate of the EU Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) until April 30, 2026, with a budget allocation of almost €66 million.

“The strategic objectives of the mandate of EUAM Iraq were also amended so as to further contribute to the development/strengthening of civilian aspects of security sector reform in Iraq,” the statement read.

“Today’s decision was taken as part of the strategic review of the mission carried out by the Political and Security Committee,” the statement added.

As a result of a request from the Iraqi government for advice on reforming the civilian security sector in October 2017, EUAM Iraq was established. With an office in Erbil, the mission headquartered in Baghdad was initially mandated for one year, but was extended three times based on an assessment of Iraqi needs.
