ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Iran's National Election Commission has announced that the presidential election will proceed to a second round next week after none of the four candidates managed to secure the required 51 percent of the vote.

The runoff, scheduled for July 5, will see reformist Masoud Pezeshkian face off against conservative Saeed Jalili in a bid for the presidency.

According to the latest figures, 24,535,185 people cast their votes at 58,640 polling stations across 482 cities, as reported by the spokesperson for Iran's election headquarters, Mohsen Eslami.

Although Pezeshkian leads with 42 percent of the votes, he fell short of the 50+1 percentage needed for an outright victory.

According to Khabar Online news agency, the turnout for the 14th presidential election was 40%, significantly lower than the 48% seen in the 13th presidential election in 2021, when Ebrahim Raisi won the presidency.

The preliminary results from the first round of voting are as follows:

- Masoud Pezeshkian (Reformist): 42% (10,415,991 votes)

- Saeed Jalili (Conservative): 39% (9,473,298 votes)

- Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf (Conservative): 14% (3,383,340 votes)

- Mostafa Poormohammadi (Conservative): 1% (206,397 votes)

Invalid votes totaled 1,056,159 in this election cycle.

The second round promises to be a closely contested battle between Pezeshkian and Jalili as they vie for the highest office in the country.
