ISIS remains a persistent threat to Iraq's security, warns Kurdistan Region Major General
He further highlighted that the areas of Kirkuk, Saladin, Diyala, and Nineveh provinces are the main focus of ISIS's threat to Iraq, and this threat is growing.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Abdulkhaliq Talaat, the Kurdistan Region representative for the Joint Operations Command, told Kurdistan24 on Saturday that ISIS still poses a major threat to the future of Iraq. They continue to attack Iraqi security forces on a weekly or monthly basis.
Talaat emphasized that the recent attack on Qarahanjir is a clear indication of the organization's threat to the Kurdistan Region, which could lead to an increase in attacks.
He further highlighted that the areas of Kirkuk, Saladin, Diyala, and Nineveh provinces are the main focus of ISIS's threat to Iraq, and this threat is growing.
"While ISIS may not be as strong as it used to be, the presence of sleeping cells and security gaps in certain areas makes their threats more prominent," he added.
Talaat also pointed out that the overall situation in the region, particularly within Iraq, provides favorable conditions for ISIS to intensify its activities in the country once again.
These security gaps severely impact local communities, causing widespread fear and instability. Residents in affected areas often face displacement, loss of livelihoods, and disruptions to daily life. Additionally, the persistent threat of violence hinders economic development and deters investment, further exacerbating the region's socio-economic challenges.
