ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Two children, aged eight and nine, sustained severe injuries, with one suffering 90% burns, after a kerosene tank exploded in the Malta neighborhood of Duhok city.

Duhok Civil Defense spokesperson Bewar Abdul Aziz told Kurdistan 24 on Thursday, July 25, 2024, “After we were informed of a fire on the roof of a house, our teams were able to control the fire. Unfortunately, two children were injured with burns—one with burns over more than 90% of his body and the other with 25% burns. Both were transferred to the hospital.”

Regarding the cause of the fire, Abdul Aziz explained, "The two children were playing on the roof of their house and tampered with the oil tank, setting it on fire, which led to this disaster."

He further noted, "The high temperatures and placing the tank under strong sunlight resulted in the emission of a type of gas, which increased the speed of the fire and caused the tank to explode."
