ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – As the ripening season for fruits and vegetables unfolds in the Kurdistan Region, local markets are filled with an abundance of homegrown agricultural products.

The majority of the fruits, vegetables, and food items available are produced by Kurdish farmers, showcasing the region’s agricultural prowess.

Mohammed Luqman, a seller of fruits and vegetables, told Kurdistan24, "Customers prefer domestic products. If they know our goods are locally produced, they are more likely to buy them compared to imported products."

Taha Ahmad, another vendor, highlighted the positive impact of the Kurdistan Regional Government's recent decision to ban certain imports. This policy has not only supported local farmers but also increased the sales of their products in the market.

The Kurdistan Regional Government is focusing on revitalizing agricultural infrastructure to enhance food security. Their strategy includes boosting food production to achieve self-sufficiency and exploring export opportunities for surplus goods.

Dr. Talaat Mohammed, a food security expert, emphasized the need for improved irrigation projects to increase agricultural output. He noted, "With the right irrigation and land management, the Kurdistan Region, which has favorable environmental conditions, can achieve self-sufficiency in food production."

Agriculture remains a key sector for ensuring food security and diversifying income sources in the Kurdistan Region.

The government's efforts to develop the agricultural sector and open foreign markets for local products aim to strengthen the region’s economic stability and food security.
