ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism has announced significant progress in its efforts to promote the Kurdish language within the region’s tourism and commercial sectors.

In 2023 alone, more than 1,012 out of 1,400 tourist and commercial establishments successfully had their signs translated into Kurdish.

This update was shared during a meeting between Minister of Municipalities and Tourism Sasan Awni, Director General of Tourism in Erbil  Dler Muhammad, and several department heads from the ministry.

The discussion centered around the vital role tourism plays in bolstering the Kurdistan Region's economy, a priority consistently highlighted by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who advocates for ongoing development and revitalization in this sector.

Minister Awni also reviewed the progress of the initiative to change and translate signs across tourist and commercial locations into Kurdish.

He emphasized the importance of continuing this effort, with 2023 marking a major milestone as the majority of the 1,400 targeted establishments had already adopted Kurdish signage.

The ministry remains committed to ensuring that the remaining locations comply, with ongoing inspections and serious efforts to complete the translation process.

The Minister urged all involved to enhance their efforts in translating the signs to further support the cultural and linguistic identity of Kurdistan.
