ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Nasrollah Rashnoudi, the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Erbil, on Tuesday in a press conference expressed his gratitude to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for their warm reception of Arbaeen pilgrims.

In particular, Rashnoudi acknowledged the efforts of the Barzani Charity Foundation, police, security forces, and traffic police in the Kurdistan Region to foster a positive atmosphere for visitors.

He also extended his appreciation to key Kurdish leaders, including Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, for their directives to ensure that all necessary facilities and services were provided for religious pilgrims.

Arbaeen, an important religious event for Shia Muslims, takes place forty days after Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The event draws millions of pilgrims to the city of Karbala, Iraq, each year to honor the memory of Imam Hussein and his 71 followers, who were killed in 680 CE during the Battle of Karbala.

Over 20 million Shia Muslims participate in the annual pilgrimage, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
