ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Region Coordinator for International Advocacy, Dindar Zebari, announced on Sunday that the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD) has handed over 11.9 GB of crucial data to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

This data includes information and research on legal procedures for prosecuting ISIS criminals.

Zebari received Acting Special Adviser and Head of UNITAD, Ana Peyró Llopis, and her team to discuss the latest steps in implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2697.

This resolution concerns the end of UNITAD's mission in Iraq and the handover of evidence of ISIS crimes to regional authorities.

"In coordination with UNITAD, and in order to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2697, the second part of the documents and investigations were handed over today to the relevant parties of the Kurdistan Region," stated Zebari.

This handover comprises 11.9 GB of information and research focusing on legal procedures for the trial of perpetrators of international crimes committed against Kurdish Yezidis and other communities.

Zebari extended his gratitude to the UNITAD delegation for their technical support in digitizing documents, a process the KRG will continue to utilize in the future.

Llopis noted that this is the second phase of the evidence handover. “On Thursday, July 11, 2024, in the first phase, UNITAD handed over 45.95 gigabytes of encrypted documents and information to the Kurdistan Region’s authorities,” she stated.

Additionally, UNITAD has conducted training courses for security officers on the witness protection program, with participation from the region’s judicial and security authorities.
