ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been taking several steps to improve the environment and prevent forest fires, including a proposal to impose penalties on individuals responsible for deliberate forest burning, according to Razaq Khaylani, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Environmental Board.

In a statement to Kurdistan24 on Saturday, Khaylani said the ninth cabinet has shown strong commitment to environmental protection.

The government has approved the installation of four air quality monitoring stations in Erbil and has signed a contract with a private company for this purpose.

Furthermore, the Council of Ministers has approved the hiring of 30 contract employees for the Environmental Office of Soran Administration to enhance environmental protection and improvement in the region.

To combat the issue of deliberate forest burning, the Environmental Board plans to submit a proposal to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The proposal seeks to enact a decision that would prohibit any use of burned forest areas for up to 15 years.

In another move aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers has asked the Ministry of Finance and Economy to completely eliminate customs duties on imported electric vehicles.

These measures highlight the KRG's increasing focus on environmental issues and its determination to preserve the natural beauty and resources of the Kurdistan Region.
