German Federal Armed force extended deployment mandate

After that date of extending, the process of the coordination and cooperation will be bilateral between each of the coalition force and the Iraqi Government as well as Kurdistan Region.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – On September 18th, the German Federal Government extended the mandate for the deployment of the German Federal Armed Forces that is already in Iraq, for another 15 months.

According to the mandate, the deployment aims to secure that Iraqi Armed and Security forces will be capable of obstructing ISIS resurgence, as well as to guarantee the security and stability in Iraq.

According the Federal Armed force, the Iraqi Government supported extending the German deployment in Iraq, also last year in September the German Federal Government confirmed that Kurdistan Region Government supported the continuation of the deployment till the mission ends.

It is a part of NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), the Federal Armed force continues their work that is to train and advise the armed and security forces to the end of that extend.

The Ministry of Defense stated in the German Parliament “The movements of ISIS in Iraq continue and German forces still have an important task there, therefore, we call for an extension of our mission to fight ISIS in Iraq until December 31, 2026,”

“NATO's mission in Iraq must continue at Baghdad's request. We will coordinate with our international partners, the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government on these developments," He added.

The mission of the Federal Armed Forces Deployment in Iraq will be:  

"- Federal Armed Forces Mission in Iraq:

- Air-to-air refueling with tanker aircraft

- Air transport for international organizations, allies and partners

- Maritime and airspace surveillance as part of NATO’s AWACS: Airborne Early Warning and Control System

- Advisory support for international partners for the development of capabilities

- Carrying out consultation and coordination tasks in Iraq

- Development of capabilities of the regular Iraqi armed and security forces

- Medical service and first aid tasks"
