New pond in Erbil
According to Hawrami’s statement the allocated budget for Khanzad Pond is 676 million dinars, and he believes it has a large capacity to prevent any floods might occur in Erbil.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Director General of Water Resources at the Kurdistan Regional Government, Karwan Sabah Hawrami, on Sunday, stated to Kurdistan 24’s Website, another pond will be built near Erbil, called Khanzad Pond.
He revealed that is the 25th pond built up within Erbil zone, and confirmed it was already existed in the masterplan.
According to his statement the allocated budget for Khanzad Pond is 676 million dinars, and he believes it has a large capacity to prevent any floods might occur in Erbil, “we guess it will collect at least 250000 meters of water, which will affect the reduction of floods because the water from that area was flowing back into Erbil,”
Another target of building such pond is to process the water for Erbil, agriculture and irrigation, tourism beneficial, and a variety of other benefits.
Sabah didn’t mention the construction company that is going to build the Khanzad Pond, but he said “it’s allocated to a company which it will start to build it soon”
“The teams at the Directorate of Water Resources are busy with planning another pond in Sheraswar, which will be a very large, good pond and will be good for tourism, also after planning, the cost will be set” he added.
Hawrami extended his gratefulness to the 9th cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government for its continuous support to the water sector and protection of securing water in Kurdistan.
It is understood that since the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) from 1992 to 2019, only eight dams were built with a capacity of collecting 50 million m3 water.
While, the ninth cabinet and only in the last four years, 10 dams have been built with a storage capacity of collecting 160 million m3.
The total amount of water to get collected in the Kurdistan Region, will be 10 billion 122 million m3, and that would reduce the potential risk of drought to a great extent.
