ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Monday, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani will attend the inauguration ceremony of the Bastora Dam, a significant project under the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), aimed at enhancing water security in the region.
The Bastora Dam, a key infrastructure project, stands 30 meters high, spans 180 meters in width, and stretches 630 meters in length.
It has a storage capacity of 20 million cubic meters of water and covers a rainwater catchment area of 108 square kilometers.
This project is expected to positively impact groundwater levels and provide irrigation for surrounding areas. Additionally, the dam is set to become a tourism hotspot and a new center for fish production.
The Kurdistan Region currently hosts 34 large, medium, and small dams. Under the leadership of the ninth cabinet, six dams—Chamrga, Khans, Dewana, Turajar, Aquban, and Shawger—have been successfully completed. The Goma Span Dam is also expected to be finished by the end of this year.
Beyond dams, the Kurdistan Region has made strides in developing water retention facilities, with 118 ponds currently in existence.
Of these, eight large ponds have been completed during the ninth cabinet, with another 43 currently under construction.
According to a survey by the Kurdistan Regional Government, the current capacity of the region's dams stands at 150 million cubic meters.
