PM Masrour Barzani, outgoing Japanese Ambassador discuss continued bilateral ties, KRG elections

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday, Nov. 9, received Japan's Ambassador to Iraq, Futoshi Matsumoto, in a farewell meeting marking the end of the diplomat's tenure.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani expressed his gratitude to the Japanese ambassador for his efforts in strengthening bilateral relations. He specifically acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and its various projects implemented across the Kurdistan Region.

Ambassador Matsumoto reaffirmed Japan's commitment to further strengthening ties with the Kurdistan Region across various sectors.

The discussion also touched upon the successful completion of the recent Kurdistan Parliament elections and emphasized the importance of forming the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet in a timely manner.

Japan has been a significant partner in the Kurdistan Region's development, particularly through JICA's involvement in infrastructure and capacity-building projects.

The diplomatic relationship between Japan and the Kurdistan Region has grown stronger in recent years, with Japan maintaining active engagement in various sectors including education, technology, and infrastructure development.

This meeting comes as the Kurdistan Region prepares to form its new government following the successful parliamentary elections held in Oct. 2024.
