ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, to participate in the global climate conference (COP29).

The conference, scheduled to run from Nov. 11 to 22, follows a formal invitation extended to Kurdistan Region's President Nechirvan Barzani by Azerbaijan's ambassador to Iraq on July 22, 2024.

The UN-supervised conference represents the world's most significant gathering on climate change issues. This year's key objectives include:

- Reaching agreements on increasing financial support for impoverished nations affected by climate change

- Establishing measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions

- Implementing strategies to mitigate climate change impacts

The Conference of the Parties (COP) serves as the primary decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The Kurdistan Region's participation in COP29 reflects its growing engagement with global environmental initiatives and climate change mitigation efforts. This marks a significant diplomatic opportunity for the Kurdistan Region, as these conferences typically bring together world leaders, environmental experts, and policy makers to address global climate challenges.

The Region's participation is particularly relevant given its strategic position in the Middle East and its experiences with environmental challenges, including water scarcity and climate change impacts on agriculture.
