ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Sulaimani Forestry and Environmental Police Directorate announced on Thursday the arrest of a poacher who killed a Bezoar ibex during the nationwide census curfew.

"Despite the mandatory stay-at-home orders during the census period, an individual irresponsibly ventured into Mount Baranan and ruthlessly hunted a Bezoar ibex on the evening of Nov. 20, 2024," the directorate said in a statement.

Despite the challenging mountainous terrain, joint patrols from the Darbandikhan Forest Police Department and the Bawakhoshen Station successfully apprehended the suspect after an extensive search operation.

The authorities also recovered the weapon and binoculars used in the illegal hunting activity.

The suspect has been detained and, following initial investigations, has been referred to a judge for legal proceedings.

Wildlife protection in the Kurdistan Region has gained increased attention in recent years as authorities work to preserve the region's biodiversity.

The incident is particularly notable as it occurred during the nationwide census curfew, when all citizens were required to remain at home to facilitate the population count.

Mount Baranan, where the incident took place, is known for its wildlife populations, including protected species such as wild goats. Illegal hunting in the region carries significant penalties under local environmental protection laws.
