ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A Kurdish mother and her infant tragically drowned when a boat carrying 32 migrants capsized near the Greek island of Samos, the Returning Migrants' Association representative announced on Thursday.

The victims were identified as Naila Mustafa Ahmad and her four-month-old child, both from the Raparin independent administration of the Kurdistan Region. The incident, which occurred in the northern Aegean Sea, highlights the ongoing perils faced by migrants seeking better opportunities in Europe.

Peshraw Abdullah, a representative of the Returning Migrants' Association, told Kurdistan24, "Two women and two children from the Kurdistan Region drowned in this tragic incident. We urge the Kurdistan Regional Government to assist in repatriating the victims' bodies for proper burial in their homeland."

The boat reportedly sank due to adverse conditions, leaving several families devastated. Efforts to recover the bodies and provide aid to survivors are ongoing.

This tragedy underscores the risks migrants endure while fleeing hardship and seeking refuge, reigniting calls for safer migration pathways and enhanced regional support for vulnerable communities.
