ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Iraqi-Syrian border is fully secured, and forces remain vigilant to counter any potential threats, Major General Yehia Rasool, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, told Kurdistan 24 on Saturday. He emphasized Iraq’s readiness to respond decisively to any encroachments by armed groups from Syria.

"If Syrian armed groups approach Iraq, we will respond fiercely," Rasool warned, underlining Iraq's commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity.

The statement comes amidst escalating tensions in Syria, where armed groups have launched a series of attacks and gained control over parts of Aleppo province. Rasool described these developments as a "very negative message," underscoring Iraq's proactive measures to protect its borders.

To bolster border security, Iraq has implemented a series of precautions, including constructing a trench, deploying observation towers equipped with cameras, and enhancing intelligence operations. These steps aim to prevent any spillover of conflict onto Iraqi territory.

"We have access to everywhere on the border and will respond fiercely to anyone who attacks Iraq," Rasool reiterated.

Addressing concerns about a potential repeat of the 2014 ISIS crisis, Rasool expressed confidence in Iraq’s improved security infrastructure. “The scenario will never be repeated. Now the situation is different. We did not have patrol forces on the borders then. Now we have those forces on the borders and in the desert areas.”

Iraq’s fortified border and enhanced vigilance come as part of broader efforts to ensure stability in the region amid ongoing turbulence in neighboring Syria.
