Erbil’s Heart Center as one of the most advanced centers for treatment of heart diseases has always been at the center of the 9th cabinet of Kurdistan Regional Government as well as the Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

During the 9th Cabinet, the center saw noticeable growth and expansion, with the number of beds increasing from 52 to 140. This means that the center has almost tripled in its size.

Furthermore, a specialized pediatric unit, a system for water recycling, cutting-edge storage, and several other newly built departments have been added to the center.

Dr. Shwan Othman, Head of the Catheterization and Heart Disease Department, informed the Kurdistan Region’s Media and Information office that, “Previously there was only one cardiac consultant and one heart sonographer. However that has been expanded to three cardiac consultants and three heart sonographers. The combination of these two could help nearly 150 patients on daily basis.”

The center receives patients from all corners of Iraq. During the past 10 months, the cardiovascular center has received and served more than 80,000 patients, conducted 1,287 open-chest heart surgeries. Moreover, roughly 4,000 stents and balloons have been installed for the patients.

It is also noticeable that 41% of these patients from the past 10 months are not from Kurdistan Region.

Currently the center has a cutting-edge and spacious storage facility and has stored all the necessary medical equipment for the next 6 months. The storage is also equipped with dozens of modern devises that is unique in quality to both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The center operates 24/7 and has dozens of specialized medical personnel, doctors and healthcare staff. The center also offers its services at an 80% lower cost compared to other private hospitals.

Erbil’s Heart Center stands as a symbol of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s care for the wellbeing of its citizens. The center’s growth into a healthcare hub, both locally and regionally, represents a significant achievement by the KRG’s efforts to establish world-class medical facilities within the region. Such efforts could provide better healthcare to the citizens of Kurdistan Region and reduce both dependency and need for travelling abroad for medical reasons.
