ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - On Friday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced that the Syrian Army has retreated from several villages near Raqqa, on the North bank of the Euphrates River, about 160 kilometers (99 miles) east of Aleppo.

There is a growing fear that ISIS cells take the opportunity and fill in the security gaps created in this part of Syria following the retreat of the Syrian Army.

The Observatory also indicated that this retreat has increased the potential for ISIS activities and the threat of attacks on several areas surrounding Raqqa.

The Observatory reiterated that the retreat has been sudden and as a result, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has stepped in to control and oversee the areas to confront any threat of ISIS.

There have been reports of ISIS activities in this part of Syria.

Recently, the military bases of the Syrian army went under attack in rural areas of Raqqa and caused further concern to the local civilians of the fate that awaited them once the conflicts reached their areas.

The rural areas of Raqqa have strategic importance it is home to as many conflicting parties as there are in Syria.
