ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Mohamed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, hailed the Kurdistan Region’s recent parliamentary elections as a significant democratic milestone during a UN Security Council meeting on Friday. He emphasized that the successful conduct of the elections reflects positive developments in governance and stability in the Kurdistan Region.
Al-Hassan also praised Iraq’s recent achievements, including the completion of a nationwide census and the election of the Iraqi parliament speaker. He noted the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure and public services, contributing to sustained progress in the region.
Iraq’s Role in Regional Stability
The envoy underscored Iraq’s determination to maintain neutrality amidst growing regional tensions, lauding the Iraqi Prime Minister’s efforts to promote peace and protect sovereignty. "Iraq is striving to position itself as a vital corridor for transportation, energy, and trade, fostering regional integration and prosperity," he stated.
Ongoing Challenges and Reforms
Despite these accomplishments, al-Hassan acknowledged that corruption continues to hinder Iraq’s socio-economic growth. He urged further reforms to enhance transparency, accountability, and governance. "Strengthening institutions and safeguarding human rights remain essential for Iraq’s future," he said, highlighting the need to finalize appointments to Iraq’s Independent High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR).

Al-Hassan expressed concern over the prolonged displacement of Yezidis and other groups, calling for the full implementation of the Sinjar Agreement to enable the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs). He also commended Iraq’s repatriation efforts at al-Hol camp and urged acceleration of the process, with the government targeting completion by 2025.
