ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol apologized for his unexpected declaration of martial law on the night of December 3.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, President Yoon appeared in public for the first time since the declaration of martial law, which was quickly lifted by a vote of parliament.

In a televised speech, Yoon expressed regret over the concerns the declaration had caused, saying, "I am truly sorry and apologize to the people who were worried about this unexpected situation."

Stating that he made the martial law decision "with a sense of helplessness" as the head of state, Yoon addressed rumors about a potential second declaration: "There will never be a second martial law."

Yoon stressed that he would take full legal and political responsibility for the martial law decision.

Additionally, he noted that he would leave decisions regarding his position to the ruling People's Power Party (PPP), which nominated him for president.

The South Korean National Assembly is scheduled to convene on Saturday to vote on the impeachment of President Yoon following the failed martial law declaration.
