Erbil (Kurdistan24) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s commitment to maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity, stressing that Russia will not permit the division of the country.
Lavrov also criticized U.S. and Israeli actions in Syria, emphasizing Russia’s ongoing support for the Syrian transitional government.
Speaking on Thursday, Lavrov reaffirmed that Russia continues its contact with the new Syrian administration and has no plans to withdraw its diplomatic presence from Syria.
“Ahmed Shara has indicated the long-standing, strategic nature of Russia-Syria relations, and we fully support this perspective,” Lavrov said, referencing the commander-in-chief of the Syrian transitional government.
Lavrov accused the United States of trying to divide Syria by supporting groups seeking to secede and seizing the country’s oil resources.
He stated, “The Americans are trying to partition Syria and are supporting organizations that aim to exploit Syria's oil to achieve this goal.”
Addressing Turkey’s concerns, Lavrov reassured that Russia recognizes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s concerns and is working to uphold Syria’s unity, in particular in eastern areas under U.S. influence.
Lavrov also expressed concern about Israel’s military actions in Syria, cautioning that “Israel should not try to ensure its own security at the expense of others.”
