Iraqi PM pledges to respect Syrian political process
He underscored Iraq's commitment to coordinating with Syria on border control while refuting reports that Maher al-Assad, brother of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, had entered Iraq.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated that Iraq will respect the Syrian political process and monitor its developments.
During a press conference, the Iraqi Premier highlighted that “any disruption in Syria’s prisons will push us to confront terrorism.”
Al-Sudani confirmed that Iraq has notified Syria's new administration of their position concerning recent developments.
He underscored Iraq's commitment to coordinating with Syria on border control while refuting reports that Maher al-Assad, brother of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, had entered Iraq.
The Prime Minister also explained that the former Syrian regime did not request Iraqi military intervention during the conflicts.
These statements come after a high-level Iraqi delegation visit to Damascus on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024, led by Intelligence Chief Hamid al-Shatri.
The delegation met with Ahmed al-Shara (Mohammed Jolani), the General Commander of Syria's new administration, to talk about bilateral security and political matters.
This diplomatic meeting signified an important development in Iraqi-Syrian relations during Syria's ongoing political transition.
