ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraq is preparing to resume commerce with Syria following Syria's completion of key border requirements. The establishment of a secure and well-regulated joint border crossing is expected to enhance economic ties and streamline the movement of goods between the two nations.

Hassan Sheikh, chairman of the Iraqi-Syrian Commerce Council, confirmed that Iraq has finalized its preparations and requested Syria to implement the necessary border infrastructure to prevent the entry of smuggled goods. In response, Syria has successfully met the stipulated requirements, including the deployment of border guards, customs offices, passport controls, and official stamps, mirroring the well-established al-Qa'im border crossing.

"Syria is now awaiting final approval from Iraqi security leaders to formalize the agreement, which will outline operational procedures," Sheikh stated. "All exported materials must comply with documentation requirements, including proof of origin, customs paperwork, inspections, and official stamps, ensuring a transparent and regulated trade process. These measures are expected to be fully in place within this week."

The resumption of trade will allow Iraq to export essential food products, such as dates, along with industrial goods, while importing a variety of Syrian products, including sweets, fresh fruits and vegetables, cosmetics, perfumes, medicines, and medical supplies.

In alignment with this progress, the Syrian Economy Ministry issued a statement on Jan. 25, 2025, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening the domestic economy. The ministry's plan includes bolstering exports, expanding into new markets, and enhancing trade relations with neighboring countries, particularly Iraq.

This development is anticipated to foster economic growth for both nations, create new business opportunities, and further regional cooperation. The reinforced trade route marks a positive step in economic recovery and collaboration between Iraq and Syria.
