Iraq strengthens border security while encouraging diplomatic and economic ties with Syria
Despite security concerns, political and economic experts emphasize the importance of fostering positive relations between Iraq and Syria.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq is taking proactive steps to enhance security along its border with Syria and advocating for stronger diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. To prevent terrorism and curb smuggling activities, Iraq is continuing to build a 300-kilometer concrete wall in Anbar province, north of the Euphrates River.
Despite security concerns, political and economic experts emphasize the importance of fostering positive relations between Iraq and Syria. They call for a phased approach to normalization, highlighting that geographical proximity makes cooperation beneficial for both countries.
"We encourage diplomatic dialogue to resolve issues between the two nations," noted Saif Said, a security expert. "It is essential for Syria to engage in constructive discussions to strengthen ties with its neighbors."
Iraq has implemented additional measures, including trenches and surveillance systems, to safeguard its territory as part of ongoing efforts to enhance border security. While these initiatives continue, political analysts stress the necessity of resuming economic activities. They urge Iraq to reopen the border for trade and tourism following the temporary 60-day closure, ensuring mutual economic prosperity.
The combined efforts of securing the border and promoting diplomatic engagement reflect Iraq’s commitment to stability and regional cooperation. As Iraq continues to balance security needs with economic interests, there is optimism that sustained dialogue and collaboration will lead to long-term regional stability and prosperity.
