ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS) has voiced deep concern over the escalating violence in Syria’s coastal region, where clashes between state security forces and armed groups led by remnants of the former regime have resulted in hundreds of casualties, the majority of whom are civilians. The council warned that the ongoing instability is exacerbating Syria’s crisis and deepening societal divisions.

SOHR: 340 Alawites executed by Syrian security forces

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 340 Alawite civilians have been executed in Latakia and Tartus at the hands of Syrian security forces and extremist factions. Reports indicate that mass executions have taken place based on sectarian and regional affiliations, with dozens of homes looted.

Additionally, the overall death toll since the outbreak of hostilities has risen to 524, including 213 armed fighters from both sides, 93 personnel from the Syrian Defense Ministry and Internal Security Forces, as well as hundreds of civilians, including women and children.

Mounting Protests for Political Inclusion

The KNCS highlighted that these events come amid growing protests across multiple Syrian regions, with demonstrators demanding inclusive participation in the country’s constitutional process and future governance.

The council condemned all armed actions that undermine stability and target security forces, stressing that the former authoritarian regime, which devastated the country and displaced millions, continues to exploit the current situation to spread chaos and disrupt national unity.

Rejection of Exclusionary Policies

The KNCS cautioned against further entrenching the crisis through exclusionary policies pursued by the Syrian Interim Government, warning of the dangerous consequences such approaches could have on the country’s future.

The council urged the new authorities in Damascus to exercise restraint, take immediate steps to halt violations against civilians, and ensure their safety and property, particularly in the coastal areas affected by military operations. It also rejected sectarian rhetoric targeting Syria’s diverse communities and called for an independent investigation into all reported violations.

Call for a Representative Transitional Government

Emphasizing the need for a broad-based political transition, the KNCS called for the establishment of a transitional government with full executive powers that reflects the aspirations of all Syrians—free from the exclusionary practices that have characterized previous political dialogues and the constitutional drafting process.

The council reiterated its call for a serious national dialogue involving all Syrian components, based on democratic pluralism and without external political interference. It also appealed to the international community to support efforts to lay the foundations for Syria’s new political order.

Political Solution as the Only Path Forward

Reaffirming that dialogue and a political solution remain the only viable path to resolving Syria’s prolonged crisis, the KNCS urged all national forces to take responsibility and work collectively toward a just and democratic future for all Syrians.

The deteriorating security situation has led to the deployment of additional forces to these areas, with authorities struggling to contain the escalating confrontations.
