Iraqi and Syrian Foreign Ministers Discuss Joint Efforts to Combat ISIS

Fuad Hussein further emphasized that Iraq’s experience could benefit Syria, citing the successes of Iraqi counterterrorism operations.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a high-level meeting on March 14, 2025, to discuss cooperation in combating ISIS and strengthen their bilateral ties. The two officials emphasized the importance of joint operations to tackle the ongoing terrorist threat, highlighting their mutual responsibility to confront ISIS.

In a press conference following the meeting, Hussein stated, "The security challenges posed by ISIS are shared between both Syria and Iraq, and we must work together to combat this menace." He also mentioned the possibility of establishing a joint operational framework to counter the terror group more effectively.

Hussein further emphasized that Iraq’s experience could benefit Syria, citing the successes of Iraqi counterterrorism operations. "Syria can gain from Iraq’s experience in handling terrorist networks," Hussein said.

Meanwhile, Al-Shaibani stressed the significance of Syria and Iraq working closely together in these operations. "We need stronger coordination between our two nations, not only to counter ISIS but also to address any future security threats," he noted.

Both foreign ministers acknowledged that ongoing instability in Syria could directly impact Iraq’s security. Al-Shaibani explained that Syria’s internal issues have led to a spillover effect, affecting neighboring countries, particularly Iraq. He emphasized the necessity of deeper cooperation to mitigate the risks posed by ISIS and other extremist groups.

Al-Shaibani also outlined Syria’s commitment to working with Iraq to secure their mutual borders, ensuring a more robust defense against terrorist infiltration. "We are ready to assist Iraq in the fight against ISIS, as securing Syria’s stability is inherently linked to Iraq’s security," he remarked.

Syria and Iraq Plan to Enhance Economic Cooperation and Border Security 

Regarding trade relations, Al-Shaibani called for stronger economic cooperation, emphasizing the need to remove barriers between their nations to foster growth. "We aim to enhance our commercial ties and eliminate obstacles that hinder our trade relations," he said.
The two ministers also discussed regional integration, noting that as part of the Arab nation, they must continue to work together for a better future, beyond just governmental cooperation but also as a collective force in the Arab world.
