ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A powerful explosion rocked Shahid Rajaee Port in Iran's Hormozgan province earlier today, causing widespread destruction and halting port operations, according to reports from Tasnim News Agency.
The blast, whose origins are still under investigation, took place at an administrative building within the port complex. According to Tasnim's correspondent on the ground, the explosion's shockwave was so intense that it completely destroyed the building and crushed numerous nearby vehicles.
Early indications suggest that the explosion may have been triggered by the detonation of a fuel tanker located in the northern section of Shahid Rajaee Pier. Local officials have yet to provide a definitive explanation for the cause of the incident, but rapid response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene to contain the situation and prevent further damage.
Port activities were immediately suspended following the explosion, as security and emergency forces moved in to secure the area. Despite widespread reports of injuries among port employees, no official confirmation regarding casualties has yet been issued.
The Director General of Crisis Management in Hormozgan province confirmed the explosion but refrained from offering further details, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing.
The Shahid Rajaee Port is one of Iran's largest and most strategically significant maritime hubs, located near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Any disruption to its operations is likely to have broader implications for regional trade and logistics.
As emergency crews continue their work, authorities have pledged a full inquiry into the explosion to ascertain the cause and prevent future incidents. The extent of the damage and potential casualties are expected to become clearer in the coming hours.
