ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Friday that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will attend the upcoming Arab League Summit in Baghdad. The summit, scheduled for May 17, will provide a platform for President al-Sharaa to share his vision for the region's future.
Iraq's Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities, Ahmed Fakak al-Badrani, delivered the formal invitation on behalf of Prime Minister Sudani. President al-Sharaa has officially confirmed receipt of the invitation and his intention to participate in the summit.
The decision to invite the Syrian president marks a notable moment in Iraq's efforts to foster dialogue among Arab nations and address regional challenges through diplomacy. While the invitation has sparked some domestic debate, notably from the Islamic Dawa Party, which on April 20 strongly objected to the invitation, citing past crimes and the need to uphold justice for Iraqi victims of the war.
