ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — In a preemptive move to safeguard the sanctity of the Hajj pilgrimage and avoid diplomatic or legal entanglements, the Iraqi High Commission of Hajj and Umrah issued a comprehensive advisory on Sunday, urging Iraqi pilgrims to strictly adhere to Saudi Arabia's religious and legal codes.
The Committee emphasized that any political, sectarian, or provocative behavior could result in serious consequences, including imprisonment, fines, or deportation.
The Committee's statement comes ahead of the departure of thousands of Iraqi citizens to Mecca and Medina for Hajj—one of Islam's five pillars and a spiritually transformative journey for Muslims around the globe. Highlighting the need to preserve the peace and order of the pilgrimage, the Committee called on all travelers to treat the holy sites with the utmost respect and to avoid any actions that could disrupt the collective religious experience.
"Hajj is a major religious ritual that brings together Muslims from around the world and must be treated with respect," the statement declared. The advisory outlined several key prohibitions: pilgrims must refrain from chanting or raising political or sectarian slogans; wearing attire or displaying symbols, photos, or flags that convey political or sectarian meanings is strictly forbidden.
The Committee was particularly clear about the sensitivities around visual documentation within the two holiest mosques in Islam—the Haram Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. It warned that taking or sharing images of religious or political figures in these areas could result in punitive measures.
Further caution was given against sharing unauthorized posts on social media, a growing concern in the digital age where even minor infractions can escalate diplomatically. The Committee underscored that Hajj should not be used as a platform to "spread political ideas or provoke tensions."
Pilgrims were also advised to be vigilant regarding what they carry during their journey.
The Committee outlined a list of prohibited items, including narcotics, cigarettes, hookahs, gold, excessive amounts of cash, and other unauthorized materials. Travelers were strongly advised to comply with Saudi customs regulations, both at airports and land crossings, to avoid detention or confiscation of goods.
One of the sternest warnings was directed at those attempting to smuggle or assist individuals without official Hajj permits. The Committee made it clear that facilitating unauthorized participation in Hajj constitutes a serious offense under Saudi law and is punishable by heavy fines, jail time, and deportation.
The statement concluded with a call for national unity and religious integrity. Pilgrims were reminded of their responsibility to uphold the dignity of Iraq’s representation during the Hajj. "Avoid actions that may incite hostility or hatred toward pilgrims of other nationalities and sects," it read.
The Committee urged full cooperation with Iraqi and Saudi authorities to ensure a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage for all.
"The purpose of these warnings is to ensure that Iraqis perform the Hajj ritual easily and safely, and prevent them from being punished for violating Saudi laws and regulations," the statement said.
With the Hajj season approaching, the Iraqi High Committee’s message is clear: faith and discipline must go hand in hand. Politics and sectarianism have no place in Mecca.
