ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday visited the site of Erbil’s major high-speed water transmission project, which is expected to resolve the city’s long-standing water scarcity for years to come.

The work in the project started in September 2023 with the laying of the foundation stone by PM Barzani. The project has now surpassed 75% completion and is on track to be finalized by the end of this year, according to project engineers and supervisors.

Once operational, the ambitious project will pump water from the Great Zab River to Erbil using advanced infrastructure designed to deliver clean, high-quality water. Officials described it as one of the largest and most strategic water initiatives not only in the Kurdistan Region but across Iraq. It is projected to significantly improve access to water for Erbil’s growing population.

Prime Minister Barzani praised the efforts of the engineers, supervisors, and all staff involved, commending their professionalism and adherence to technical standards. “This is a vital project for the well-being of our people, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone working to make it a reality,” Barzani stated during the visit.

The Erbil Water Transmission Project is part of the KRG’s broader strategy to improve public services and build durable infrastructure. Its completion is expected to ease Erbil’s water supply challenges, reduce reliance on tanker deliveries, and enhance quality of life across the city.

Barzani reaffirmed the government's commitment to long-term infrastructure development, calling it key to a sustainable and secure future for the Kurdistan Region.
