ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is set to launch a major water infrastructure project to address Sulaimani’s long-standing water crisis, Ari Ahmad, General Director of the Water and Sewage Directorate, told Kurdistan24 on Wednesday.

Ahmad announced that the third water line from Dukan to Sulaimani will soon be implemented, marking a significant step toward resolving a water shortage that has affected the city for over 25 years. He noted that several neighborhoods in Sulaimani still lack access to a water distribution network.

The $293 million initiative, approved by the Council of Ministers, is one of the KRG’s strategic projects aimed at keeping pace with Sulaimani’s rapid urban expansion and growing population. An official announcement on the project is expected shortly.

According to Ahmad, the project is expected to take between two and a half to three years to complete. In the interim, the government has devised short-term measures to ease the crisis, including the deployment of water tankers and the renovation of the existing Dukan 1 and Dukan 2 systems.

The new project is seen as a crucial investment in the city's infrastructure, expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents once completed.
