ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a gesture underscoring the enduring strategic partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani visited the newly constructed U.S. Consulate General in Erbil on Tuesday ahead of its official opening.

The Prime Minister was warmly received by U.S. Consul General Steven Bitner, who personally accompanied Barzani on a tour of the expansive new diplomatic compound.

The visit offered an early look at what is expected to become one of the largest U.S. consular facilities in the world, a testament to the deepening diplomatic, economic, and security ties between Washington and Erbil.

During the tour, Prime Minister Barzani and Consul General Bitner examined key sections of the new facility, which has been under construction for several years.

The complex is designed to support expanded consular operations, foster closer bilateral cooperation, and serve as a symbol of the United States’ long-term commitment to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq more broadly.

The consulate, which will soon be officially inaugurated, reflects the strategic importance of the Kurdistan Region as a stable and reliable partner for the United States in a region marked by volatility.

In a statement delivered on Monday, March 31, 2025, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce announced that the Erbil consulate will be the largest American diplomatic post in the world, underscoring Washington’s unwavering commitment to its partnership with the Kurdistan Regional Government.

"The new consulate will strengthen our partnership and diplomatic cooperation with the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Government of Iraq on shared priorities and challenges, including countering extremism and fostering long-term peace," she stated.

The project also demonstrates continued U.S. support for political stability, economic growth, and institutional development within the KRG.

Prime Minister Barzani’s visit comes at a time of intensifying regional diplomacy and reflects his government’s active engagement with international partners. The U.S. Consulate in Erbil has historically played a vital role in coordinating humanitarian assistance, promoting private sector investment, and enhancing educational and cultural exchange programs.

The forthcoming inauguration of the new consulate marks a new chapter in the U.S.-Kurdistan relationship—one rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for security and prosperity in the region.
