ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Sunday, where the two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral relations and regional stability.

President Nechirvan Barzani and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed satisfaction with the current level of ties between the Kurdistan Region and Iran, emphasizing their mutual desire to further expand cooperation—particularly in the fields of trade and economic development.

President Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to a policy of balanced diplomacy based on shared interests and mutual respect, while also highlighting the historic and longstanding relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic.

In a post shared on X, President Barzani described the meeting as a “pleasure,” noting that discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the Islamic Republic of Iran based on mutual interests.

“We also discussed the latest developments, emphasizing the critical need for peace and stability in the region,” Barzani wrote.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions and shifting alliances in the region. Barzani’s engagement with Iran’s newly elected president highlights the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing efforts to maintain balanced diplomatic ties with its influential neighbor.

President Pezeshkian, a reformist figure who recently assumed office, has emphasized dialogue and regional cooperation in his early public statements. His meeting with the Kurdish leader signals a continued interest in fostering pragmatic relations with both Baghdad and Erbil.

President Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Tehran follows the conclusion of an official trip to Baghdad and comes at the invitation of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to participate in the Tehran Dialogue Forum (TDF), a high-level diplomatic initiative aimed at fostering regional cooperation. Scheduled for May 18–19, 2025, the forum will bring together senior officials from 53 countries to address pressing regional and global issues.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Presidency, Barzani’s participation in the TDF underscores the Kurdistan Region’s longstanding commitment to dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and collective security in the Middle East.
