ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced on Saturday that political parties, alliances, and independent candidates may begin submitting their lists of nominees for the upcoming parliamentary elections starting Sunday, May 25, 2025.

According to the statement released by IHEC, the candidate registration period for Iraq’s next parliamentary elections will begin on Sunday and remain open for one month, closing on June 24, 2025.

The announcement marks a significant step toward the parliamentary vote scheduled for November 11, 2025, a date set by the Iraqi Council of Ministers.

IHEC also revealed that nearly 29 million Iraqi citizens are eligible to vote and participate in the elections. Of the 66 officially registered political alliances across Iraq, 18 have formally requested to participate in the elections, while eight new alliances have submitted registration applications. Additionally, two newly formed alliances have already received official approval from the commission.

The upcoming parliamentary elections are viewed as a critical opportunity for Iraq to reaffirm its democratic process amid growing demands for political reform, transparency, and government accountability. With an increasingly mobilized electorate and new political forces seeking to enter the national stage, the months leading up to the elections are expected to shape the future of Iraq’s legislative direction.

Observers anticipate intense political maneuvering in the coming weeks as alliances finalize their candidate rosters and campaign platforms in preparation for what could be a pivotal vote for Iraq’s stability and governance.
