PM Masrour Barzani to Present Results of U.S. Trip at Wednesday Cabinet Meeting
The energy agreements signal a strong vote of confidence in the Kurdistan Region's investment climate and come at a critical juncture as the KRG seeks sustainable economic growth and long-term energy security.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is set to brief the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers on Wednesday, regarding the outcomes of his recent official visit to Washington, D.C., where he oversaw the signing of two major energy agreements with leading American oil companies.
On Tuesday, KRG Spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani announced that Prime Minister Barzani will speak at the weekly cabinet meeting to detail the achievements of his U.S. trip. The visit marked a significant step in strengthening economic and energy ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
During his visit, which began on May 19, 2025, Barzani participated in a formal ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington. There, he oversaw the signing of two major investment agreements in the energy sector between the KRG and two prominent U.S.-based oil companies — HKN Energy and WesternZagros.
A $110 Billion Energy Boost for Kurdistan
The agreements, valued at $110 billion, are expected to have a transformative impact on the Kurdistan Region’s oil and energy sector, as well as its broader economic development. The deals involve the expansion and development of key gas and oil fields in the Kurdistan Region, which could significantly increase oil and gas production and exports in the coming years.
“These agreements are not only of economic importance but also serve to reaffirm U.S. investor confidence in the Kurdistan Region as a reliable and secure partner in the energy industry,” a senior KRG official familiar with the negotiations told Kurdistan24.
Both HKN Energy and WesternZagros have a longstanding presence in the region, and their renewed commitments suggest deeper collaboration ahead, especially amid ongoing global energy market fluctuations.
Strategic Implications Beyond Oil
Barzani’s U.S. trip carries strategic weight beyond the energy sector. It comes at a time of increased diplomatic activity between Erbil and Washington, with the KRG aiming to enhance its international economic partnerships and attract foreign investment to diversify its economy.
The visit also underscores Erbil’s push for practicing its constitutional rights in a more assertive international profile, particularly in securing bilateral agreements independent of Baghdad amid disputes over oil revenue sharing and budget allocations.
With the Prime Minister expected to outline the full scope of his visit during the cabinet meeting, local observers and stakeholders are anticipating more announcements related to U.S.-Kurdistan cooperation, potentially extending into education, security, and technological sectors.
