ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Sunday extended warm congratulations to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on the anniversary of its founding, emphasizing the importance of coordination and solidarity between Kurdistan Region’s political forces during a period marked by instability and critical transformation.

In an official statement issued by the KDP’s Political Bureau and addressed to Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the PUK, as well as the party’s Politburo and leadership members, the KDP praised the PUK’s contributions and perseverance.

“On the occasion of the anniversary of the founding of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, we extend our warm congratulations to you, your esteemed members, and the supporters of your resilient party,” the statement read. “We wish you continued success and perseverance.”

The KDP also used the message to reiterate its commitment to greater political coordination and cooperation, stressing the need for a unified Kurdish front to safeguard the Region’s constitutional rights and hard-earned achievements.

“We once again underline the importance of harmony and collaboration between our parties—and with other Kurdish political actors—to fulfill our shared responsibilities during this challenging and transformative phase,” the statement added. “We remain committed to preserving our gains and working within the legal and constitutional framework of the Kurdistan Region.”

The statement concluded with a renewed message of congratulations and well wishes for future success.

The relationship between the Kurdistan Region's two dominant parties—the KDP and PUK—has experienced both cooperation and rivalry over the decades. However, in the face of increasing economic and political pressure from the federal government in Baghdad, both parties have been calling for deeper unity and shared strategic vision.

The Kurdistan Region is currently grappling with delayed salary payments, budgetary disputes with Baghdad, and ongoing attempts by some political actors in Iraq to weaken Kurdish autonomy. Amid this, calls for internal unity have grown louder, with leaders from both parties acknowledging that only through a united Kurdish stance can they effectively protect the Region’s interests and negotiate from a position of strength.

This year's anniversary of the PUK’s founding served not just as a moment of celebration but also as an opportunity to reinforce intra-Kurdish solidarity and resilience in the face of mounting challenges.
