ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff officially confirmed on Saturday the death of two of its top military leaders following Israel’s large-scale airstrikes that struck Tehran and other targets early Friday.

According to a statement from the General Staff, Brigadier General Gholam Reza Mehrabi, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence Affairs, and Major General Mehdi Rabani, Head of Operations, were killed during the strikes.

The announcement comes amid the fallout from Israel’s sweeping military operation, which targeted nuclear installations and military infrastructure across Iran. Among the high-ranking figures killed were IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami and Chief of Staff General Mohammad Bagheri, in addition to several nuclear scientists.

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, announced that the recent Israeli attacks on his country have killed 78 people and injured 320 others, marking the most violent escalation between the two sides in years.

This announcement comes as Iran launched a second wave of retaliatory attacks against Israeli targets early Saturday morning, as part of a military operation codenamed "True Promise."

Israel Describes Strike as “Unprecedented”

The Israeli military stated that its air force launched a series of overnight strikes on dozens of targets, including surface-to-air missile systems in the Tehran area. It described the operation as “the first of its kind,” conducted over a distance exceeding 1,500 kilometers from Israeli territory.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised address, described the strikes as part of a strategic mission to “eliminate the existential Iranian threat,” confirming that Israel also targeted the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.

Iranian Retaliation and Mounting Tensions

In response, Iran launched multiple missile barrages toward Israel, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to dozens more. The exchange marks the most serious military escalation between the two countries in years.

Regional and international powers have expressed growing concern that the conflict could spiral into a broader confrontation, threatening the fragile stability of the Middle East.
