Kurdistan Region PM Offers Condolences Over Passing of Chaldean Bishop
“The late Archbishop played a significant role, in cooperation with institutions of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), in serving displaced Christians who fled to Kurdistan to escape the brutality of ISIS terrorists,” Barzani said.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday extended his condolences following the passing of Archbishop Mar Paul Thabet Habib, the Chaldean bishop of the Alqosh Diocese.
In a message of mourning addressed to Patriarch Cardinal Mar Louis Raphaël I Sako, the head of the Chaldean Church worldwide, Barzani expressed his sympathy to the bishop’s family, the Chaldean Church, and all Christians of Kurdistan.
“The late Archbishop played a significant role, in cooperation with institutions of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), in serving displaced Christians who fled to Kurdistan to escape the brutality of ISIS terrorists,” Barzani said.
He prayed for God’s mercy upon the late bishop’s soul and offered words of comfort to his family and loved ones.
The Chaldean Christian community in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq has faced tremendous hardship over the past decade, particularly during the rise of ISIS, when thousands were forced to flee their homes. Religious leaders like Bishop Sabet Habib were pivotal in providing spiritual and humanitarian support during that time.
